A member of the Blue Cross Life team will review the claim to assess whether any other steps or information are required.
Step 3
How long it takes to reach a decision depends on what other requirements are requested, if any. If a claim is approved, you can typically expect to receive payment in as little as two weeks.
Step 4
Once a claim gets approved, the beneficiaries or claimants (depending on the type of policy) will receive a cheque within a few days of being notified of the decision.
Blue Cross Life will take care of reviewing all the paperwork and paying out approved claims.
Once a claim is approved, the people entitled to the benefit (the beneficiary for a term life policy, or the policyholder for a critical illness policy) will receive a tax-free lump sum. The payment is issued via cheque.
This money can be used as needed—to cover lost income, an outstanding mortgage, everyday living expenses, out-of-pocket medical expenses, childcare, or home health costs.
It can take as little as two weeks to receive the payout from a policy. However, it all depends on the details of the claim and whether additional information, documents or steps are requested during the claim review process.
With term life insurance, the claim review and approval process may take longer if the policyholder passed away within the first two years of the policy.
In Canada, all term life insurance policies include a standard suicide clause. This clause indicates that the death benefit will not be paid out if the policyholder passes away from suicide in the first 2 years of the policy being active.
Critical illness insurance policies also have their own industry-standard exclusions. You can learn more about them by reading a sample policy.
In some cases, additional exclusions are added to a policy based on an individual's lifestyle or health situation. It's important to carefully review and fully understand any exclusions that apply to your specific policy.
We're committed to safeguarding our customers’ privacy, which is why we'll need to first confirm your identity as the policyholder, executor, or personal representative. After verification, we can walk you through the policy details.
With term life insurance policies, we always suggest keeping your beneficiary (or beneficiaries) updated on your policy details.
